We have charged for scanning for over a year now. The reason is easy, that equipment doesn’t come cheap. The Library Auxiliary (that runs the photocopier/printer/scanner equipment) is not state or university funded. We function and operate on the revenues earned by the auxiliary. We invested over $130,000 in software and hardware last January. We are simply charging for output whether tangible or intangible to cover the cost of the equipment and allow us to replace equipment in the future. We are also looking to add new equipment in the coming months in the form of a plotter and a self-service fax/scanner. We will be adding mobile printing in just a couple of weeks. All those services require additional investment by the auxiliary.
As for the price increase, the budget office wanted us to increase it to 15 cents per page last year and we held back for a year. Even with the increase we are still cheaper than the other print centers on campus. We had not had a price increase for B/W copies and prints in over 8 years.
