Virginia Tech and VCOM students, faculty, and staff use their Hokie Passports as their library cards. Virginia residents and Virginia college students can get a borrowers card to check out our material, including books, DVDs, CDs, and bound journals.

  1. You need to come to Newman Library in person. Once here, come to the Newman Services Desk on the second floor.
  2. Ask the staff for a new borrower card.
  3. Present the staff with your valid photo ID (Virginia driver's license, Virginia ID card, or Virginia college ID card are examples) and they will ask you to fill out the borrower card.
  4. Once your account is created, the staff will give you your new library card. You will use this to check materials out of the library. You can also use the number on the card to manage your library account online. It does not give you off campus access to restricted online materials.

When ever you want to check items out of the library, bring those items to the Services Desk and give the staff your library card.

Minors can get a card, but they need to have their parent or guardian present when getting the card. Minors also need to present a valid photo ID. Please be aware that minor accounts are subject to the same fines and restrictions as all other library accounts.

Generally, Virginia patron accounts are removed after 6 months of inactivity.
